PQC 101: Why encryption needs to evolve

What is post-quantum cryptography, or PQC?

Encryption uses mathematics to keep information private.

A sufficiently powerful quantum computer would defeat some of the methods widely used today.

PQC introduces new mathematical methods designed to resist attacks from both traditional and quantum computers.

You do not need a quantum computer to use PQC.

These methods run on ordinary computers and networks.

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)’s introductory guide explains the fundamentals [1].

Why does this matter?

Cryptography protects banking transactions, private messages, and business information.

Cryptography also helps verify identities and confirm software updates come from trusted sources.

Some widely used methods, including RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography, would become vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers.

The risk starts before those computers arrive.

Attackers might collect encrypted information today and retain the data for future decryption.

This is called “harvest now, decrypt later.”

Cloudflare’s beginner guide explains this risk [2].

For example, medical records or business secrets requiring protection for decades deserve attention today.

What should organizations do?

  • Identify where vulnerable cryptography protects data and identities.
  • Prioritize information requiring long-term confidentiality.
  • Ask technology providers about their PQC migration plans.
  • Test compatibility, performance, and operational impact.
  • Build the ability to change cryptographic methods as standards evolve.

CISA’s quantum-readiness guide provides a practical starting point for this work [3].

For a deeper introduction, Cisco’s “Post-Quantum Cryptography For Dummies” explains the basics, the risks, and practical steps for preparing your network [4]

My takeawayPQC is preparation for a change in how we protect digital trust.

The first step is understanding what your organization relies on today.

How long does your sensitive information need to stay confidential?
