Graphic: AI's next wave is inference

AI’s next infrastructure wave is inference.

IBM and Together AI signed a $240 million multiyear agreement to deploy a large-scale AI inference cluster on IBM Cloud.

Training builds an AI model.

Inference happens whenever a trained model processes a request and generates a response, recommendation, decision, or action.

Today, humans initiate much of this activity through prompts and AI-enabled applications.

Over time, AI agents will drive inference at a much larger scale. Agents will operate continuously, communicate with other agents, access tools, analyze information, and execute multistep business processes.

A single human request could trigger dozens or thousands of automated model interactions.

This shift will increase infrastructure demand across:

  • Cost per token
  • Response latency
  • Network performance
  • Availability and resilience
  • Security and workload isolation
  • Power and cooling efficiency

Compute provides the processing capacity.

The network connects the infrastructure, keeps GPUs productive, and delivers AI services to people, applications, and agents.

The competitive question is shifting.

Who will operate AI efficiently, securely, and reliably as inference moves from human-driven prompts to agent-driven operations at scale?

Is your AI infrastructure strategy ready for the inference economy?
