Graphic: AI inference is becoming distributed

AI inference is becoming distributed.

For years, enterprise AI architecture centered on hyperscale cloud infrastructure.

More AI processing is now moving closer to users, operational systems, and enterprise data.

Recent announcements provide clear proof points:

  • Apple introduced desktop systems designed for local AI workloads. Mac Studio supports up to 512 GB of unified memory and clustering for distributed inference.
  • NVIDIA offers desktop infrastructure for running local models and autonomous agents.
  • Microsoft Foundry Local supports model execution on Windows systems, with cloud fallback when required.
  • Cisco and Splunk announced self-managed Splunk AI for on-premises, private-cloud, and air-gapped environments.

This brings AI assistants, agentic investigations, and custom AI agents closer to sensitive machine data without moving such data outside the enterprise environment.

The strategic question is no longer cloud versus on-premises.

The question is where each workload belongs.

  • Cloud for frontier models, elastic capacity, and rapid experimentation
  • Private data centers for centralized control and sustained enterprise-scale workloads
  • Edge infrastructure for low latency, operational autonomy, and real-time processing
  • Local systems for sensitive data, development, and predictable inference demand

Technology leaders should evaluate:

  • Model size and performance
  • Data sensitivity and sovereignty
  • Latency requirements
  • Cloud token costs
  • Hardware utilization
  • Power and cooling
  • Network capacity
  • Operational support
  • Security and governance

Local execution does not remove infrastructure requirements.

Distributed inference expands the environment requiring identity controls, encryption, patching, model governance, observability, and lifecycle management.

My takeawayenterprise AI will operate across a distributed compute fabric.

Competitive advantage will come from placing each workload where economics, performance, security, and control align.

Does your AI architecture define where each workload should run?
